Britain Favors "Lowering of Nuclear Threat" in South Asia

Britain said Monday, December 11, it strongly favored "lowering of nuclear threat" in the region as it supported India's right to decide its "strategic response" to its own security environment.

Visiting British Secretary of State for Defence Geoffrey Hoon said in New Delhi, "Britain is all for lowering of nuclear threat level ... Naturally we wish others to follow suit."

Describing as "encouraging" New Delhi's voluntary moratorium on nuclear tests, Hoon said, "We hope this statement will soon be reinforced by New Delhi's signature and ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty."

He also described as "positive," India's support for early start of negotiations for the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty at Geneva and said New Delhi and London could work together to persuade other countries.

The British defense secretary is here on a three-day visit, the first of its kind in 10 years.
