Construction of Nanjing Subway to Kick Off

On December 10, Dai Yongning, deputy mayor of Nanjing City and general director with the headquarters of Nanjing Subway construction, announced that all the preparatory work of the first phase of the project which has attracted the close attention of the citizens, had been finished and its construction will formally begin on December 12.

The first stage of the Nanjing Subway, listed as a key State project, is a key, indicative, cross-century project in Nanjing's city construction. Stretching 16.9 km from north to south, involving a total investment of 7.015 billion yuan and having 13 designed stops along the line, is scheduled to be completed in 2005. It's thus far the largest city traffic infrastructure project of Nanjing.

Dai said that a large amount of homemade equipment will be used for the project, bring the rate of domestically produced equipment to over 75 percent, with the per unit cost standing at about 415 million yuan, currently projects under construction and approved to be built at the lowest per-km cost.
