Sources say that by the end of this year, the profits earned by State-owned and holding industries will reach 230 billion yuan, rising by 130 percent over 1999 and 180 percent over 1997. By the year-end, most of the 14 trades can make profits, 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities can continue making money or change the situation of deficits. The number of large and medium loss-making enterprises, which were 6,599 by the end of 1997, will decrease by 65 percent.
