Large-scale Benevolent Parade Held in Macao

A grand parade with the participation of more than 30,000 people was held in Macao December 10 to raise residents' awareness of charitable activities.

In the company of lion dancing and band performances, senior officials of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) joined the walking together with groups of general residents.

The parade was the first since the founding of the Macao SAR inDecember 1999, and the number of participants exceeded that in last year.

Over the past days, organizers of the parade had been busy visiting governmental departments and social bodies. A total of 5.16 million patacas (645,000 U.S. dollars) had been raised by December 9.

The annual event was launched in 1984 by the Macao Daily News, the most influential Chinese newspaper in Macao, to raise public welfare fund for residents living a difficult life.
