Nice Summit Enters Fourth Day for Final Efforts

European Union (EU) leaders had to do their best for final concessions on Sunday, December 9, in the fourth day reform-minded summit, the longest one in the bloc's history.

The summit in Nice, the French Riviera city, was originally due from Thursday to Saturday but EU leaders failed to make compromise on main reform issues for future enlargement.

The leaders from 15 EU member states agreed Saturday not to hold further talks through night in seeking a deal for the Treaty of Nice. Instead, they held informal talks to try to narrow their distances, according to official sources.

EU leaders discussed late Saturday a revised compromise proposal presented by current EU presidency holder France and resumed their talks 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Sunday.

Usually, EU summit is hosted by a presidency member state in two days at most.
