China Grants Financial Aid to Egypt in Tele-educationChina and Egypt signed an agreement in Cairo on Friday, December 8, on China's extension of 3 million US dollars in aid to finance a tele-education project in Egypt. The deal was inked by Ma Xiuhong, deputy minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation of China, and Ahmed el-Darsh, Egyptian minister of planing and international cooperation. Under the deal, China will provide a set of remote teaching system to Egypt to help connect its 27 governorates and promote the development of its education infrastructure. This is believed to be the first hi-tech cooperation project between the two countries. The visiting Chinese official said after the signing ceremony that China has been paying special attention to strengthening cooperation with Egypt in various fields, especially in economy. Ma said China is satisfied with the tangible progress it has made in economic cooperation with Egypt, adding that the volume of Chinese investment in Egypt amounts to 10 million dollars, covering a total of 22 projects. For his part, Darsh said the remote teaching system is within a bilateral agreement on joint economic and technical cooperation signed during Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's visit to China in April, 1999. The minister said Egypt's open-door policy in economy and trade has made the country a growing market, hoping more Chinese businessmen will come to invest. He reaffirmed Egypt's upholding of "One China" policy and strong support for China's efforts to join the World Trade Organization.
