5 Million Kenyans Face Starvation

More than 5 million Kenyans are facing starvation as a result of persistent droughts in many parts of the country, said a high-ranking Kenyan government official on Thursday in the country's southern port city of Mombasa.

Many people in the country's 45 worst hit districts are facing death, said Noor Aden, under-secretary of the President's Office in charge of relief and rehabilitation, when receiving 102 tons of pasta donated by the Italian government.

The donation is part of the 2,000-ton donation the Italian government pledged earlier.

The Kenyan government has so far received 198 million shillings (about 2.5 million U.S. dollars) from donors for relief operations in the famine areas, Aden said while pleading for more aid from the international community.

He said the famine situation would continue until mid next year.
