Sudan Expels US Diplomat

Sudan decided December 7 to expel a US diplomat after he was found at a meeting with several opposition leaders accused of plotting subversion.

Sudan's Foreign Minister Osman Ismail said in a statement that Glenn Warren, a political officer in the American embassy, was regarded as persona non grata and had to leave the country within 72 hours.

The minister said Warren was found discussing "issues related to Sudanese security and stability" with leaders of the opposition National Democratic Alliance.

Warren had been briefly detained together with the opposition leaders but was released later, while the opposition leader still remain in custody.

Relations between Sudan and the US have been tense as Washington accuse Khartoum of sponsoring terrorism.

The opposition has since 1983 been fighting the government for greater autonomy for the mostly Christian and animist south. Over 2 million people have died due to years of fighting and ensuing famine and disease.
