China Needs Int'l Cooperation to Tackle Pressing Environment Issue

China is in need of international cooperation on environmental science to solve the pressing environmental problems, said an official from the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Friday, December 8.

The key fields for international cooperation include information technology, biological high technology, techniques on air and water pollution control and treatment of garbage, management of chemical products, and environmental monitoring, policies and economy, said Zhang Shigang, deputy director of the international cooperation department under the SEPA.

The introduction of advanced research achievements from abroad will help China find the environmental protection technology and management methods which are most suitable to the country, said Zhang.

So far, China has signed more than 30 bilateral contracts or memorandums on environmental protection with 27 countries, and reached cooperation agreement on nuclear safety with over 10 countries.

China has joined more than 20 international environmental conventions including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

Since 1988, the number of cooperation projects on environmental science between China and foreign countries and international organizations has been increasing. The cooperation has helped improve environmental science and management in China.
