Top Legislator: China Continues to Support IPU

China will, as always, support and take an active part in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), said top legislator Li Peng Friday, December 8.

Li, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks in a meeting with IPU secretary-general Anders Johnsson Friday afternoon.

Although various countries differ in their parliamentary mechanism and democracy forms, they can undertake friendly contacts, Li added.

The IPU carries a lot of political weight and has an important impact on promoting inter-parliamentary exchanges and cooperation among various countries, he said.

Li made positive comments on the fruitful work by president Najma Heptulla of the IPU Council and Johnsson for the success of the Millennium Parliament Leaders Conference, which opened in New York on August 30.

Johnsson said that Li, with a senior Chinese delegation he led, had played an important role in securing the success of the millennium conference, which he described as a new milestone of the IPU.

He expressed the hope that Li and the Chinese top legislature give more concern and support to the IPU.
