China to Conduct Test for 3G Mobile Phone Technology

China is going to conduct a test for 3G mobile phone technologies next March to decide which one should be used in the future. The Ministry of Information Industry will ask Telecom providers to operate the 3G network for trial.

The signal-receiving rate of 3G mobile phone is 200 times faster than GSM mobile phone and the Internet accessing speed 40 times that of the GSM.

Currently, there are three types of 3G technologies that are vying to enter into China's Telecom market. However, studies on 3G technology are still underway, said Wu Jichuan, minister of Information Industry.

Siemens is to test the TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) technology which was co-developed by Siemens and China Telecom for the Chinese market. The other two technologies are respectively the broadband CDMA and the US-based Qualcomm's CDMA 2000.

China will decide which technology should be adopted according to the first round test result early next year. 98 percent of China's mobile phones are using GSM standard and so far, only the Great Wall Network has introduced Qualcomm's CDMA.
