15 People Injured in Clash on Italian-French Boarder
At least 15 people were injured on the Italian-French border Thursday, December 7, in clashes between police and anti-globalization protesters who have been prevented from traveling to the European Union summit in Nice.
At Italy's northwestern town of Ventimiglia, 25 km from Italian- French board, six protesters were taken to hospital to be treated for cuts and bruises, while nine police officers were injured, including one who was hit by a stone in the face.
Violence broke out just outside the train station here when the demonstrators, who number more than 1,000, tried to make their way to the French consulate to protest against a decision to stop them from entering France.
The protesters were blocked in a side street some 10 meters from the station by police, who used tear gas and metal truncheons against them, Italian news agency Ansa reported.
The militants slept overnight at the station after their train, dubbed the Global Action Express, was stopped by border police yesterday afternoon.
Train services on the line have been temporarily suspended, causing serious delays.
The Global Action Express left Ventimiglia late Thursday afternoon with about 1,400 people aboard, after meeting with some of the leaders of the Nice protests.
