HK Unveils New Display TechnologyScientists in Hong Kong have developed a new flat panel display technology to replace liquid crystal displays in many high end applications. The new technology is an active matrix organic light emitting diode display developed by using low temperature polycrystalline silicon technology, according to Professor Hoi Sing Kwok at the electrical and electronic engineering department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The thin films of molecules can be induced to emit light and has the potential to replace liquid crystal displays in many applications such as in laptops, desktop computers and even television sets, the professor said. Lighter in weight and consuming less power than liquid crystal displays, the new displays can produce a greater viewing angle and quicker response. Although the technology is still under research and development, it is heading directly and rapidly for the marketplace, with Kodak as the technology leader. |
