Internet Access Project for Primary and High Schools LaunchedCourses on information technology will gradually become compulsory in primary and high schools' education, and over 90 per cent of students will have access to Internet in China within the upcoming five to ten years, Zheng Zengyi, a senior official from the Ministry of Education, said Tuesday. The programme is to form a nationwide Internet connection network between primary and high schools. Once operational, the whole network will enable all students in eastern and mid-western counties to have access to the Internet; students in remote and mountainous areas will be connected to the Internet via the broadband satellites; and other non-penetrated areas will be equipped with multimedia devices and educational software. Zheng pointed out that an Intranet network covering primary and high schools is highly recommended for the overall arrangement of the network construction in order to prevent overlapping and repeated investment. In addition, the main task of primary and high schools is to provide sufficient information in education, which should be easily accessible to both teachers and students. The specific infrastructure construction of Intranet is to be laid out by related provinces and regions, while the Ministry of Education will oversee the whole construction process. Contracted IT enterprises, before building an Intranet for schools, must get the approval from the Ministry of Education. To get the approval, they must hold the abilites to provide comprehensive and prompt after-sale services and be obliged to train both teachers and students, Zheng stressed.
