Famous Lake to Be Dredged

Work has started this week to dredge the Nanhu Lake, a famous tourist resort in Jiaxing in east China's Zhejiang Province.

It is the first time the lake will be dredged in over 300 years, local official said.

The lake is located southeast of Jiaxing. It is renowned for being the birthplace of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The first CPC National Congress was held more than 70 years ago on a boat sailing on the lake.

Every year, thousands of visitors go there to have fun and pay their tribute.

Due to lack of dredging over the years, the lake water has become unclean as sediments on the bed of the lake has increased.

The Jiaxing city government decided to dredge the whole lake at a cost of 10 million yuan (1.2 million US dollars).

The work will take six months to complete.
