Russia to Withdraw 3,000 Soldiers from Chechnya
A motorized infantry brigade of more than 3,000 people are ready to withdraw from Chechnya to its permanent base in the Trans-Baikal military district, an Interfax report said Thursday, December 7.
A group of senior officials from the Trans-Baikal military district have arrived at the federal forces' headquarters in Khankala to coordinate the withdrawal, the news agency quoted a commander of the Russian federal troops in Chechnya as saying.
The brigade has more than 500 pieces of military equipment. Some 20 trains and several Il-76 military transport planes have been requested to transport the troops.
Russia sent troops to Chechnya more than a year ago to re-establish rule in the North Caucasus region.
