Vietnamese Defense Minister Stresses Heightening Vigilance Against Peaceful Evolution
Vietnamese Defense Minister Pham Van Tra has called on its army to stay vigilant against "peaceful evolution" being staged by the enemy.
Tra was addressing the 15th Party congress of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army, which opened Wednesday, reported the Vietnam News Agency Thursday, December 7.
Tra stressed that the country's military is a nucleus that all hostile forces seek to undermine.
If they succeeded in "depoliticizing" the army, the enemy will use it as the ground for realizing their attempt to stage "peaceful evolution" as they did in the former Soviet Union and socialist countries in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, he said.
The Vietnamese defense minister further said that national defense today means not only the fight against invasions but also the defense of national security in all political, economic, scientific, technological, cultural and external affairs.
National defense is inseparable from safeguarding the Communist Party and the socialist system, the minister stressed, adding that national defense is a task of the entire Party, people and army as well as the whole political system.
