Shanghai Cracks Down on Smuggling

Customs officers in Shanghai have uncovered 794 smuggling cases and 40,000 cases involving the trading of smuggled goods from July of 1998 to October this year.

The money involved totaled 1.35 billion yuan and 1.083 billion yuan respectively, customs sources said.

The cases show that smuggling by enterprises, trading in smuggled goods and smuggling of obscene materials have been on the rise over the past two years, the sources noted.

In the first six months this year, the Shanghai Customs cracked down on more than 300 cases involving the smuggling of raw materials for textiles, auto parts, numerically controlled machine tools, cigarettes, drugs, computer and parts, mobile phones and telecommunications equipment, with a total value of 456 million yuan.

A total of 266 cases have been dealt with from January, 1999, to present, and 135 more cases are under investigation.
