According to Chongqing Culture Relics Department, the State Council has approved Chongqing to build "China Three Gorges Museum" to startup with an estimated collection of as many as 300,000 items found in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

The whole project with a floorspace of 40,000 square meters is to be completed in 2003 at a cost of RMB$500 million yuan. Housed in the museum amongst others will be a "Hall of Three Gorges' Nature, Men and History", "Show Items of Culture Relics Unearthed", "Chongqing's History and culture" etc. Thanks to a persistent effort made, over 2,000 rare culture relics along with some 10,000 items of others have been rescued. According to archaeologists, a collection of 200,000 to 300,000 culture relics will have to be put on display after completion of the Three Gorges Project.
