HK Sets Up Steering Committee on Parent EducationA steering committee on parent education has been set up in Hong Kong to strengthen parent participation in local educational affairs and further promote home-school cooperation.The committee, chaired by Director of Education Matthew Cheung Kin-chung held its first meeting Wednesday. The government attaches considerable importance to parent education. In his Policy Address this year, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa pointed out that parents were the first teachers of children and that parent-school cooperation was essential in bringing out the best of the youngsters, Cheung said. The government has set aside 50 million Hong Kong dollars (6.4 million U.S. dollars) to support parent education and encourage parents to participate in educational affairs, he added. According to Cheung, the committee will formulate and coordinate policies on the educational programs for parents, supervise their implementation and evaluate their effectiveness.
