Strong Earthquake Jolts Iran

A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 degrees on the Richter scale jolted several cities in northern Iran Wednesday evening, but so far there are no reports of casualties.

The Islamic Republic News Agency said the earthquake hit at about 20:41 local time (1711 GMT). Residents in the capital Tehran and other northern cities such as Gonbad, Minoudasht, Sari, Karaj and Mashhad all felt the tremor.

The Mashhad Seismic Base located the epicenter of the quake in Iran's northern neighbor Turkmenistan, some 200 kilometers north of the Iranian city of Gonbad.

Earlier, Tehran University Geophysics Center said the epicenter of a mild quake felt in Tehran and its satellite city Karaj Wednesday evening was in the Caspian Sea.

Reports of possible damage or casualties are currently not available.
