Angola, Russia Reinforce Military Cooperation

Angola and Russia have signed here an accord on military cooperation aimed at promoting the relationship between the two countries and bilateral cooperation in the military technology and the training of military cadres, the official newspaper Jornal de Angola said on Wednesday, December 6.

The paper said the agreement was signed on Tuesday by the Angolan Defense Minister Kundi Paihama and the visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov.

According to Klebanov, the accord enables Russia to help the Angolan Armed Forces train military cadres and reequip the Angolan national air force, navy and army by technical means.

Concluding his two-day visit to Angola on Tuesday, Klebanov said: "I'm convinced that we can sign more important documents that help develop our military cooperation".

During the visit, Klebanov met with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Foreign Affairs Minister Joao Miranda and other high-ranking officials.

Angola and Russia will also sign a series of agreements on cooperation in energy and water, mines, fishing and petroleum fields early next year, according to Miranda.
