China to Further Enlarge Recruit Scale of Higher Education

China will keep the trend of enlarging recruit scale of higher education, said Zhang Baoqin, vice director of the Ministry of Education at the 2001 All China's Higher Education Recruit Planning Work Conference held in Zhejiang University.

The conference points out that great achievements in enlarging recruit scale of higher education have been gained during the past two years. Historic changes have taken place in China¡¯s higher education: matriculating rate has increased substantially to ease the conflict and pressure between supply and demand of higher education; higher school¡¯s potential has been fully exerted to improve profit in running schools; locations of talent cultivation becomes more reasonable, which is conducive to improving all China¡¯s citizen diathesis and providing necessary talents and intelligence prepare for China's construction in the new century.

But difficulties and conflicts still exist during the period of development such as illegal running of school, low education quality and difficulties for students to get jobs when graduate.

Zhang emphasizes that higher education will keep the enlarging trend in recruit scale. And the development of higher education will stick to the socialist direction. At the same time, he advocates a thorough comprehension and implement of the state's charging policy on higher education.

Reportedly, in 2000, higher schools have recruited about 4.6 million students, among which about 2.2 million students have been recruited by ordinary higher schools, 1.47 million ones have been recruited by adult higher schools and about 900 thousand students have been recruited by other higher school. Higher vocation education has increased swiftly. Statistics show that all China's higher vocation schools have recruited about 1.07 million students, which is over 400 thousand more than that of the year before.
