Flower Sales Boom in Yunnan

The annual output value of flowers in southwest China's Yunnan Province, known as the "Kingdom of Plants", is expected to reach 2.2 billion yuan this year.

As the largest fresh flower producer in China, Yunnan turns out 1.1 billion flowers annually. Over 90 percent of its flowers are for export, both to other Chinese provinces and neighboring countries.

Currently, Yunnan grows flowers on 2,000 ha of land in Kunming, Jinghong, Zhongdian and other places. It has 17,000 kinds of high grade flower strains, making up 62 percent of the country's total.

More than 100 million seed plants and 1 billion fresh flowers are traded at the Dounan flower market in Kunming, the provincial capital, each year.

The province was placed first in China for seven consecutive years in flower production. A local economist predicted that the flower industry in Yunnan will rise at an annual rate of 20 percent in coming years.
