Protection Zone for Rare Yangtze FishChina is preparing to build a protection zone for rare fish that inhabit the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.The plan has been approved by the State Council, sources said. Mu Tianrong, director of the fishery administration of Yibin city, southwest China's Sichuan Province, said that the protection zone will be built along the over 400 kilometer-section of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest river. The zone will start at Leibo County and end at Hejiang County in Sichuan Province. Investigations show that 69 varieties of zooplankton and 48 other species of animals, which live at the bottom of the river, inhabit this section of the Yangtze River, including the famous Chinese sturgeon, paddlefish and mullet. However, the number of fish has reduced drastically in recent years due to the deterioration of the environment. Yibin city has started to reduce the number of fishing boasts while banning rare fishing in sections of the Yangtze, Jinsha and Minjiang rivers. |
