Houjie Town Offers 30,000 Yuan for Each Dead

The contractors of a three-storey mall, which collapsed on December 1 in South China's Dongguan City, have offered an out-of-court deal to compensate each dead in the accident 30,000 yuan.

A family member of a victim from neighbouring Sichuan Province disclosed the amount to reporters. Most family members of the casualties deemed the sum too low to compensate a life.

The local Houjie Town government kept the number of the dead a secret, though there are increasing evidence that the casualties exceeded 12 persons, more than the eight said by the town.

Central government officials, headed by NPC Vice-Chairwoman Chen Muhua, are investigating the case. In China, an industrial accident in which more than 10 people are killed is considered ``serious case,'' and the main leaders of the local government are prone to face criminal penalty.

Liu Dailin, relative of a crushed worker from Sichuan Province, told reporters that people who deal with problems arising from the accident hinted the compensation amount at 30,000 yuan.

Liu quoted one of the people as saying he would end up with less if he brings the case to court.
