Hong Kong Business Environment Council Set UpThe Business Environment Council (BEC) of Hong Kong was formed Wednesday, December 6, marking a milestone of the local business community in the fight against pollution and conservation of the environment.The BEC is a non-profit-distributing organization formed by merging the Private Sector Committee on the Environment and the Center of Environmental Technology, which were established in 1989 and 1992 respectively. Currently, it has got 19 members who are sizable enterprises in Hong Kong. In a luncheon celebrating the formation of the BEC, John Prestbo, editor of Dow Jones Index, said, "The fight between environmentalists and businesses is far from finished. But a solution is emerging that offers some victory for everyone. It is called sustainability." The BEC pursues the principle of sustainability, which takes the larger world into account. With the resources and efforts of its member companies, the BEC aims to develop closer cooperation between the public and private sectors in tackling environmental issues, assist business and industry in achieving environmental excellence and raise the environmental awareness of the community as a whole.
