Russia's Population Likely to Shrink to 134 million by 2015

Russia's population is likely to go down to 134.039 million by the end of 2015, said a report by the Russian State Statistics Committee Tuesday, December 5.

At the beginning of 2000, Russia's population was 145.559 million. If the current negative growth rate keeps unchanged, by the end of 2005, Russia will have only 142 million citizens, and 137.961 million by the end of 2010.

From 1992 to 1999, Russia's population decreased by 2.8 million, or almost 2 percent, said the report.

Experts say average life expectancy, which currently stands at 65.9 years, is to grow to 69.6 years by 2015, increasing from 59.9 to 63.9 years for men and from 72.4 to 75.6 years for women.
