Cross-Straits Symposium on Laws Held in ShenzhenMore than 80 experts and scholars of law from both sides of the Taiwan Straits gathered in Shenzhen Tuesday, December 5, to exchange views on legal issues of common concern.The experts and scholars discussed the issues of the legal system for civil affairs, the system for protecting intellectual property rights, legal affairs concerning China's entry into the World Trade Organization, laws on marriage, and many other issues. Ren Jianxin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of the Law Society of China, reiterated at the symposium that there is only one China in the world, and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to China. Ren said, "We have the greatest sincerity to strive for the peaceful reunification of the motherland, and we are firmly opposed to and fully prepared to stop all activities to split the motherland." Ren pointed out that the temporary separation between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is a disaster for the Chinese nation and is not what the Chinese people from both sides are willing to see. Reunification of the motherland conforms to the basic interests of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and favors the economic, cultural and social prosperity and development of Taiwan. "It is also conducive to the stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole," Ren stressed. Ren expressed the hope that law experts and scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Straits will enhance bilateral understanding and cooperate more closely to contribute to the development of cross-Straits relations and the peaceful reunification of the motherland. |
