Russia Finds Site with Excessive RadiationA site with excessive radiation was discovered Monday, December 4, at Novovoronezhskaya nuclear power plant in Russia's southwestern Voronezh region.The site was discovered during a radiation monitoring of a waterway from power-producing units No.1 and 2 in the plant, which had been taken out of operation years ago, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said. The ministry did not elaborate on how much radiation it was in excess of the normal standard, but noted "the site has been fenced with barbed wire, barrier signs have been installed, and the sampling of the air, water and soil is being carried out." Power-producing unit No.1, with a VVAR-210 reactor, was launched in 1964 and mothballed in 1988. Power-producing unit No.2, with a VVAR-365 reactor was launched in 1969 and mothballed in December 1990. Three power-producing units are currently in operation at the plant: No. 3 and No. 4 with VVAR-440 type reactors and No. 5 with a VVAR-1000 reactor. |
