World Biggest ATM CAN Launched in ShanghaiAs a major part of Shanghai Information Port Project, the reconstruction of Shanghai broadband network was completed on December 4.The broadband network, having eight core nodes with a transferring capacity of 40G and 90 edge nodes, is the biggest ATM City Area Network (CAN) that has been built so far in the world. Shanghai Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, started a test world-top-level ATM network in 1995 and took the lead to build up a local ATM network two years later. By the yearend of 1999, the broadband network that had been put into operation in the city had eight core nodes and 41 other edge nodes. The newly unveiled broadband network can transfer information of large capacity and has linked cities including Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou. In the meantime, the coast city has also carried out the strategy of "Optical City". The total length of fiber has reached 320 thousand kilometers with fiber nodes surpassing 4000 and a coverage of over 90 percent. Furthermore, Shanghai has stepped up its efforts in the construction of ADSL broadband access network, which has reached 166 today from 18 early this year. In addition, Shanghai has also constructed optical cables both underground and underwater, which enabled it to link the US, Europe, Asia and other regions. By PD Online staff member Yin Zhili
