Hong Kong, Printing and Publication Center in Asia

Hong Kong has loomed as Asia's printing and publishing center, with more than 5,000 printing institutions and a payroll of 44,000 employees supported with an advanced technology and low price, show statistics released by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

From January to September this year, the export value of printed materials has increased 20 percent over the same period of last year, while the exported printings reached HK$ 8.6 billion in 1999, a rise of 17 percent over the previous year, according to statistics.

In the meantime, Hong Kong has become the third largest supplier of imported books, newspapers and magazines of the United States, with more than 30% of its total exporting presswork going to this country.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council predicted that China's access to WTO would provide Hong Kong a more extensive market prospect for its printing industry.
