Earthquake Jolts Tokyo

A pre-dawn underwater earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 jolted Tokyo and nearby areas Tuesday, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake was centered about 25 miles under the seabed off the coast of Ibaraki state, about 69 miles northeast of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.

The tremor, which struck at 1:47 a.m., could be felt in Tokyo and surrounding states.

Kazuo Takeuchi, an Ibaraki police spokesman, said no damage or injuries were reported from the earthquake.
