Mexican President Vows to Strengthen L. American Identity, Ties with Chile

Visiting Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his Mexican counterpart, Vicente Fox, agreed on Monday, December 4, that the two countries should strengthen both their Latin- American identity and bilateral ties.

"We'll turn Mexico's eyes to join our brothers in Latin-America," Fox said.

Mexico and Chile should come closer and the two nations should achieve more in multilateral forums, he added.

Fox also told Lagos that Mexicans wished to widen investment and trade with Chile.

Lagos arrived here on Monday -- three days after Fox was sworn in as Mexico's president.

Elected in July, Fox had dedicated his first post-victory foreign trip in August to improving relations with the South American Mercosur trade bloc.

His government said commercial and financial ties between Mexico and the countries of Mercosur must be strengthened.

The Mercosur customs union groups Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay and has Chile and Bolivia as associate members.
