Dongguan Investigates Shoddy Construction after Deadly AccidentThe building collapse in Chiling Village, Dongguan City, south China last Saturday has stimulated an urgent and thorough investigation of shoddy construction in the city.The municipal government convened officials from concerned departments and from its 30-plus districts and towns to a meeting at the accident site, where eight people were killed and another 30 injured. The building, which was authorized as a one-story shop, collapsed while the third floor was being illegally built. Li Changchun, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central (CPC) Committee and secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of CPC, and Lu Ruihua, governor of Guangdong, who are both in Beijing at a Party meeting, have instructed the concerned departments to do their utmost in the rescue and investigation work. A vice-governor arrived at the site Saturday to take command of the rescue work and show support to the injured. Sources with the Dongguan government said that it is not uncommon to see farmers' adding multi-stories onto buildings in the villages without applying for authorization, leading to many hidden dangers. Li Jinwei, secretary of the Dongguan Municipal Committee of CPC, said that the city will immediately carry out an examination of the construction certificates of ongoing building projects and suspend construction of those without adequate documents.
