New Optical Line to Link Shenzhen, Hong Kong

Nortel Networks announced December 4 that a new contract with China Netcom Corporation (CNC) to deliver and install an industry-leading OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System from Shenzhen to Hong Kong.

The new network will serve as an international gateway for CNC's packet-based network and will carry IP voice, video and data traffic between Shenzhen and Hong Kong from early 2001.

"Nortel Networks is committed to supporting CNC in building the new, high-performance Internet in China," said Robert Mao, president of Nortel Networks China, who came to Hong Kong for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom Asia 2000.

Nortel Networks Optical Internet solution will bring about broad and fluent international transmission for CNC's advanced domestic high-speech optical fiber networks, enabling the fast-growing operator to offer high-speed Internet access and multimedia services, he said.

The new CNC network will be a multi-service, ultra-high capacity 10-gigabit dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution based on Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System.

It is capable of delivering up to 1.6 terabits per second per fiber with up to 160 wavelengths at 10 gigabit per second. This enables up to 28 simultaneous Internet connections on a single strand of fiber.
