US to Provide $3.5 Mln Military Aid to Mongolia

The United States will provide US$3.5 million of military aid to Mongolia next year, a senior US Pentagon official said here.

Two million dollars of the aid will be used to help improve the military telecommunication system between Mongolia and its northern neighbor Russia and 500,000 dollars will go for personnel training, said US Under Secretary of Defense Walter Slocombe.

The other one million dollars are for humanitarian assistance, Slocombe was quoted by the media reports on Monday.

Slocombe, who was here for a visit from December 1-3, made the remarks while meeting with Mongolian Foreign Minister Luvsangiin Erdenechuluun and Defense Minister Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa.

During the meeting, the two sides also set the cooperation targets for the year 2001 and the United States pledged to give more military aid to Mongolia, Slocombe told reporters.
