Grand Canal's Non-Estuary History to Be Ended

Zhejiang Province has planned to invest 2.5 billion yuan in renovating the Hangyong Canal, which connects Hangzhou and Ningbo, thereby ending Beijing-Hangzhou Canal's non-estuary history.

After the transformation, the Hangyong Canal will be a fourth-class river course with the traffic capacity reaching 500 tons. The route is planned to trace up along the Qiantang River from Sanbao Shiplock of Hangzhou to the Puyang River and the Xiaoshan Inland River, to connect Shaoxing Section in Yulinguan, join the Cao'e River and Yaojiang River, cross the Hangyong Expressway, and reach the Yongjian River. The terminal is at the mouth of the Yongjiang. The whole length is 243 kilometers.

An official with the Zhejiang Development Planning Commission said that the renovation project of Hangyong Canal is the first key water transportation project of Zhejiang Province in the coming five years which has entered the substantive phase of implementation.

The Hangyong Canal is an inland river course, which connects the Hangjiahu Plain and Ningshao Plain in the economically developed areas of Zhejiang Province. It is an important part of the water transportation network south of Yangtze River. Currently, with zigzagging river course and too many shiplocks and dams, the traffic capacity of the Hangyong Canal is poor, falling far short of adaptability to the growth of the local freight volume. So, it is imperative to renovate it.
