Gennady Zyuganov was re-elected December 3 as the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (RCP).

The election was approved by 158 votes to 1 at the first plenum of the RCP central committee, which had just been elected at the party's seventh congress.

Valentin Kuptsov was re-elected as Zyuganov's first deputy. Chairman of the Duma's Education Committee Ivan Melnikov and coordinator of the Communist faction in the Duma Sergei Reshulsky were elected as deputy chairmen.

The Seventh RCP Congress closed here Sunday, electing 159 members of the party's Central Committee, 56 candidates to the Central Committee, and members of the Central Controlling Commission. Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznyov was re-elected as the member of the Central Committee.

The RCP, founded in June 1990, is the largest party in Russia with more than 500,000 party members.
