Chinese Skater Sets New Asian Women Record

Chinese skater Wang Hong set a new Asian record in the women's 1,000-meter event at the Asian Speed Skating Competition in Harbin on Sunday December 3.

Wang Hong finished the race in 1:21.14, beating the old record of 1:22.20 set by Japanese Nagaoka Yayoi at the 1997 Asian Championships.

Japan's Shihomi Shinya took the silver medal in 1:21.25, ahead of her compatriot Tomomi Shimizu's 1:21.28.

Lu Yajun won another gold for China as she completed the women's 5,000-meter race in 7:39.31, followed by Prokasheva Luydmila of Kazakhstan in 7:47.95 and Japan's Emi Miyashita in 7:49.26.

In the men's 1,000-meter, Japanese Yutaro Shinohara clinched the gold medal, clocking a winning time of 1:13.32.

Jaeman Park of South Korea came in second in 1:14.22, with China's Jiao Yunlong third in 1:14.23.

Takaharu Nakajima of Japan triumphed in the men's 1,500-meter event in 1:52.42 and fellow Japanese Yutaro Shinohara placed second 2.23 seconds behind.

Uliaynin Nikolay from Kazakhstan was third in 1:55.37.

"The participants are all top skaters and the results at the tournament are encouraging," said Eugene Sandvig, an International Skating Union representative.

"On the whole, however, the level of Asia's speed skating still lags behind that of the world." Sandvig added.
