Vice-President on Improving Rural Officials' Work Standards

The improvement the quality of officials in rural areas is a matter of great concern to the country's reform, development and stability, Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Sunday, December 3.

Efforts will also promote economic development and overall social progress in the rural areas, he said at a national work conference on ideological education for rural officials, which opened Sunday in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

China will spend two years, beginning this winter, on conducting ideological education for officials below the county- level to improve their overall work standards, according to a recent decision by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Hu said that the decision was made after a thorough analysis of the current situation in rural areas, where great achievements have been made over the past 20 years. However, there are still many problems that persist, such as the slow growth of farmers' income and the incapability of some officials.

He urges Party and Government officials at all levels to place great importance on education and take concrete measures to ensure that efforts are successful.

Vice Premier Wen Jiabao was also present at the conference.
