Spain Promises Electoral Assistance to Peru

The Spanish government on Saturday offered the Peruvian Cabinet technical assistance during the April 2001 presidential elections in the South American country.

The offer was presented by visiting Spanish Secretary of State for Cooperation Jose Miguel Cortez during a meeting with Peru's interim President Valentin Paniagua in Lima.

Cortez told Paniagua that if requested by the Peruvian government, Spain and other European Union nations are ready to send observers to Peru for the April 8 elections.

He praised Paniagua for the pacific way in which he solved the political crisis in Peru after the resignation of former president Alberto Fujimori.

Paniagua underscored the importance of relations between Peru and Spain and committed to a further development of such ties.

He reiterated the absolute need of the government's neutrality for the electoral process to come.
