Xinjiang to Become World Largest Production Base of Colorful Cotton

According to Xiong Huiyin, vice-president of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Xinjiang determines to expand the colorful cotton planting area to 500,000 mu within two years, hoping to become the biggest colorful cotton production base of the world.

It is reported that at present, the major cotton production countries in the world such as US, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, etc. are researching and popularizing the cotton. America's cotton research level is the first in the world.

China's Xinjiang province has incomparable advantages in developing the colorful cotton industry.

First, Xinjiang's water, sunlight, soil are suitable for planting the colorful cotton on a large scale. Cotton is an especial cross-pollination crop. In order to prevent them from pollination of the white cotton, planters must choose the area comparatively sealed in the course of growing. In this area, the ecological environment must be fine, the soil must be fertile, there are very few pest insects. Xinjiang just possesses these conditions.

Secondly, Xinjiang, as the largest cotton production region of our country, faces the problem of industry structural readjustment especially after the WTO entry. If Xinjiang hopes to guarantee the cotton development in a healthy way continuously, the problem of cotton upgrading must be solved. The colourful cotton is the most advantageous variety.

Since 1994, China Cotton Institute, and the Heredity Institute of China Science Academy have cooperated with Xinjiang Tiancai Technology Co., Ltd. to conduct research of the colourful cotton variety. Now they have three especial varieties of the colorful cotton for the large scale planting. It is reported, the color cotton planting area of Xinjiang has already reached about 70,000 mu this year, and the colourful cotton products are sold very well both at home and abroad, especially in the developed countries, such as America and Europe, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Australia, etc.
