Mothers' High Expectations Vital to Children's Mental Health

A recent survey shows that children whose mothers have reasonable expectations of them are likely to tap their potential and are in a healthier mental state.

A total of 885 middle school students, in the 11-19 age group, took part in the survey of middle school student's mental health state.

The Heilongjiang Youth and Children Research Institute and Harbin Medical University jointly conducted the survey,in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

According to the survey, mothers' high expectations of their children can help children improve their mental health because an appropriate degree of expectation serves not only as an encouragement, but also makes them aware of being trusted, and enables them to give full scope to their creativity.

On the contrary, if parents always take a negative approach towards their children, they will likely to suffer from mental problems such as depression, hostility toward others, anxiety and eating disorders.
