Beijing Works Hard to Prevent Power Abuse

The municipal procuratorate in Beijing has achieved some good results in the fight against crimes committed by officials by taking advantage of duty and a system to prevent such crimes has been established.

Statistics show that in the first 10 months this year, the anti-corruption departments of the procuratorates at all levels handled 1,180 cases of economic crimes, an increase from a year earlier.

As a result, a total economic loss of over 190 million yuan (US$23 million) was retrieved, a prosecutor with the municipal procuratorate said Friday, December 1.

He said 83 of the cases involved officials at the department level and 26 of them involved officials at the bureau level and above. They have all been brought to justice.

Anti-corruption efforts including exposure through the mass media, the Internet and exhibitions have helped prevent officials from breaking the law, he said.
