The death toll in the train collision which occurred in northwest India's Punjab state early Saturday morning has risen to 36 from the earlier reported 33, while the number of injured passengers also surged to 141 from 123, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

While 26 victims died on the spot, 10 others succumbed to their injuries in nearby hospitals, the PTI noted, adding that so far nine dead have been identified.

Among the 141 injured people, 33 suffered serious injuries, it added.

Sabotage Cannot Be Ruled Out

Indian Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that sabotage couldn't be ruled out in the train accident which occurred in northwest India's Punjab state early Saturday morning, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

"There may be sabotage behind the accident. We will see to it," said Banerjee in her home state of West Bengal in northeast India.

She said she was in constant touch with railway authorities carrying out rescue operations at the site, the PTI reported.

All the deceased and injured persons would be compensated, she added.
