Private Sector in Zhuhai Growing Rapidly

The private sector in Zhuhai, a special economic zone in south China's Guangdong Province, has become a driving force behind the city's economic growth.

At the end of Octoberthe city had 15,535 private companies, 24 percent more than at the end of 1999.

Flexible policies are being pursued in Zhuhai to attract investors from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas.

Seventy-eight companies each have a registered capital of ten million yuan (about US$1.2 million). The city has 42 private group companies and 299 science-based productive companies.

Last year private companies paid 192 million yuan (about US$23 million) in taxes to the government.
