France Supports UN Oil-for-food Program with Iraq

France expressed its hope on Friday, December 1, for continuing the "oil for food" program between the United Nations and Iraq, after Baghdad stopped exporting oil via Ceyhan, the Turkish oil terminal.

A spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry, Francois Rivasseau, said that although there is an impasse in relations between the UN and Iraq, France still considers the program "useful" for Iraqi people.

He said that France hopes all disputes between the UN and Iraq could be discussed within a framework of "international legality," and noted that "any initiative not in this framework would not be acceptable."

On Friday, Iraq accused American and British officials in the UN Committee of Sanctions of blocking its export of crude oil by rejecting a new formula of payment proposed by Baghdad.

Iraq says it will only use the euro currency for oil trading as of December 1.
