Nine Kenyans Killed Along Kenya-Ethiopia Border

Nine Kenyans were killed and five others seriously injured when militiamen believed to be from Ethiopia attacked a border town in northeastern Kenya, local media reported Friday.

Over 150 heavily armed militiamen Thursday besieged the Wajir outpost at the Gurar border town in Kenya's North Eastern Province, the report said.

Confirming the incident, acting Wajir District Commissioner Mahamud Maalim Mohammed disclosed that seven women and two elderly men were killed and eight houses were burnt down by the raiders.

Kenyan security forces, while attacking back in a two-hour fight, killed one militiaman and recovered an AK-47 rifle, Mohammed said. The attackers then fled towards Ethiopia.

According to the commissioner, regular police have been dispatched to the troubled area to launch a massive operation and comb the hilly area for the militiamen.

It is reported that Thursday's incident has brought the total number of people killed in the area by militiamen to 49 over the last two months.
