Syria Fully Committed to Mideast Peace Process: FMSyrian Foreign Minister Faruk Shareh reiterated his country's full commitment to the Middle East peace process and to efforts to calm down the deteriorating situation in the region Thursday, November 30.Shareh made the pledge during his meeting with Miguel Moratinos, the European Union (EU) envoy to the Middle East, who arrived in Damascus earlier in the day for a brief visit to Syria. During the talks, the two agreed that the current situation in the region is explosive and expressed their sorrow at the sufferings of the Palestinian people, the Arab Syrian News Agency (ASNA) reported. "We should do our best to restore confidence among parties and end the crisis threatening all countries of the Middle East," Moratinos told reporters after the meeting. He asserted that the EU members strongly oppose the "excessive use of force" by Israeli troops, and that European countries should be involved in all tracks of the Mideast peace process to bring about a just and comprehensive peace to the region. "We oppose any threats and support dialogue and negotiations. We believe that efforts should be made to restore the stalled peace talks," said the EU envoy. He stressed that the EU countries are making proposals to end the two-month bloody clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians and to revive the peace talks. Over 290 people, mostly Palestinians, have been killed and thousands more injured in the violence that is still raging in the Palestinian territories. |
